About Our Spelling Program
It's the age old question. "Why can my child spell all the words correctly on the Friday Spelling test, but not spell them correctly in everyday writing?" New Philadelphia city Schools has decided to tackle this problem. We have adopted the Rebecca Sitton Program in Kindergarten through grade 5. The goal of this program is "forever spellers." Students learn to spell for writing rather than memorize, and then forget, words for the Friday test. The spelling activities are embedded into daily writing, proof-reading and word study. This requires a shift in our thoughts of spelling instruction. Spelling is now an integrated part of our day instead of a small block of time.
For parents that still enjoy sitting with their children to practice words, there are links on this web-site of words that you can practice. The "No Excuse Words" are words for which students are accountable to spell correctly in all of their everyday writing and are taken from the list of core words. The Core Words or Spelling words are divided by grade levels. They are the seeds from which this program grows and develops. They provide a foundation for each grade level to begin spelling exploration and are a springboard for the study of hundreds of additional words.
Individual spelling lists are generated from a writing activity called a Word Test. The words that are evaluated in the Word Test are the words most commonly used in our English language. Any of the words misspelled in this activity become the student's individual spelling words for home and school study.
