What does it mean to be Gifted?

“Gifted” means students who perform or show potential for performing at remarkably high levels of accomplishment when compared to others of their age, experience, or environment and who are identified under division (a), (b), (c), or (d) of section 3324.03 of the Revised Code.

 In order to be identified as gifted, a student must achieve a qualifying test score on an approved standardized assessment.  The Ohio Achievement Assessments (OAA) are not approved tests for gifted identification.

Identification Areas

Students are identified as gifted in one
or more of the following ways:

Superior Cognitive

Specific Academic - in Reading/Writing,
Math, Science, and/or Social Studies

Creative Thinking Ability

Visual or Performing Arts Ability

Services for gifted students at New Philadelphia

K-2nd Grade – Services provided through differentiation with classroom teachers

3rd & 4th Grade – Language arts enrichment provided by gifted intervention specialist in collaboration with classroom teacher 1st semester;  Math enrichment provided 2nd semester.

5thGrade – Math enrichment provided by gifted intervention specialist in collaboration with classroom teacher entire school year.
     
6th & 7th Grade – Gifted classes in language arts and math provided by gifted intervention specialists at the Middle School.  Students meet daily in classroom setting.  Gifted specialist is the teacher of record for the subject.

8th Grade – Students have opportunity to take classes at NPHS and receive high school credit.
